Dolmaz, M. (2026). Trends of Graduate Theses on Active Learning in Social Studies Education: A Content Analysis. Uluslararası Eğitim ve Bilim Araştırmaları Dergisi, 3(2),
The aim of this research is to reveal the trends in postgraduate research conducted on active learning in the field of social studies education. The research was conducted using the document review method, one of the most frequently employed qualitative research methods. The data source consists of thesis studies on active learning in social studies education conducted between 2005 and 2025 and accessible in the YÖK thesis database. The criterion sampling method was used in the research. The criteria for this research were determined as “having been conducted between 2005 and 2025” and including the search terms “active learning,” “social studies,” and terms related to active learning methods/tactics/instructional practices. The research results show that studies on active learning in the field of social studies education are quite limited, that different methods are rarely used in the studies, that similar research methods and tools are used, and that the studies focus on the same topics. The studies conducted focus on the effects of active learning on academic achievement, attitudes towards the course, motivation, and the retention of what is learned. Suggestions have been made to conduct new studies using different active learning methods, focusing on different concepts, values, and skills, using different data collection tools together, and concentrating on comprehensive studies where data is collected simultaneously from different educational levels, and to utilize mixed methods research more extensively due to its advantages.

1. Introduction
The primary aim of social studies is to enable students to participate actively, consciously, and responsibly in social life as individuals (Hanaylı et al. 2020). Through social studies, students learn about the functioning of the state, become familiar with concepts such as rights and responsibilities, democratic systems, social participation, and civic awareness, and grow into individuals who respect social norms and the legal order (Kavak and İlhan, 2021; Şimşir and Çetiner, 2021). They embrace, protect, and undertake the responsibility of transmitting the cultural heritage of their society to future generations (Özkaynak and Türkmen, 2025), develop a sense of national identity (MEB, 2018), and learn about the effects of religious and national holidays, traditional celebrations, customs, and traditions on social cohesion. They grasp the spirit of society, its aesthetics, art, and literary understanding (Ay and Güllü, 2020; Yalçın, 2023). They socialize, get to know their environment, and confront various social problems such as war, migration-refugee issues, earthquakes, consumer problems, unemployment, and global warming in their social studies lessons (Durmuş and Sert, 2022; Kılıçoğlu, 2009; Yıldırım, 2019). They learn about the world, different cultures, natural and human resources, and environmental factors, and try to understand the impact of all these on social life. They learn about economic systems, production and consumption relations, and how markets operate. Furthermore, by examining the effects of economic decisions on social life, they reflect on the limitations of resources and strategies for coping with these limitations (Dündar and Kızık, 2023; Akhan and Kılıçoğlu, 2014; Dinç and Acun, 2017). For a multidisciplinary course that brings together so many goals to achieve its objectives, it needs to be activity-based, offer students the opportunity to take responsibility for their own learning and be a course based on active learning.
The aim of this research is to determine the trends in graduate theses on the relationship between social studies and active learning. In line with this main objective, the following questions will be addressed:
- What is the distribution of graduate theses on active learning in social studies education according to years and research types?
- What is the distribution of graduate theses on active learning in social studies education according to the institutions where they were prepared?
- What is the distribution of graduate theses on active learning in social studies education according to sample groups?
- What is the distribution of graduate theses on active learning in social studies education according to research methods?
- What is the distribution of graduate theses on active learning in social studies education according to data analysis methods?
- What is the distribution of graduate theses on active learning in social studies education according to data collection tools?
- What is the distribution of graduate theses on active learning in social studies education in terms of the active learning methods they used?
- What is the distribution of graduate theses on active learning in social studies education according to their topics?
- What is the distribution of graduate theses on active learning in social studies education according to their conclusions?
- What is the distribution of graduate theses on active learning in social studies education according to their recommendations?
2. Methods
This research employed document review, a qualitative research method. It should be noted that countless types of documents, including newspapers, textbooks, articles, theses, maps, journals, menus, and billboards, are part of the fabric of our world (Love, 2003) and can be easily used as data sources in social and educational research (Özkan, 2021). The data source providing the data set consists of master’s and doctoral theses on social studies and active learning conducted between 2005 and 2025, accessible from the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) thesis catalog. The data source was determined using criterion sampling. The research data were collected using the Thesis Review Form. The data were analyzed systematically using the content analysis method.
3. Findings
The first finding of the research is that thesis studies on social studies – active learning are limited at both the master’s and doctoral levels. The second finding is that the majority of studies were conducted at a few universities, with other universities either conducting one study or no research at all. The third finding is that studies were generally conducted on sample groups at the 4th and 6th grade levels, and research collecting data simultaneously from different educational levels was almost nonexistent. The fourth finding is that quantitative and mixed-methods research was preferred over qualitative research. The fifth finding is that the methods used in the research generally focused on tests such as the T-test, ANOVA analysis, and Mann-Whitney U test, while many methods were used only a few times or not at all. The sixth finding is that although the data collection tools used in the research were of different types such as tests, forms, diaries, and scales, they were generally developed to collect data on attitudes and achievement, which is quite noteworthy. The seventh finding of the study is that only 13 different active learning methods were employed in all the research. Most of these studies focused on the same methods, such as drama-creative drama, educational games, field trips, and case studies. The eighth finding is that studies on active learning have focused on a limited subject area, including academic achievement, attitudes towards the course, retention of learning, participant opinions and the impact of active learning on values, skills, and concept learning. The ninth finding is that the relevant research has concluded that active learning increases academic achievement, positively influences attitudes towards the course, makes learning more permanent, provides a fun learning environment, develops various skills, facilitates value acquisition, contributes to literacy skills, and supports self-development. The final finding of the research is that the studies suggest to practitioners that they use active learning to achieve various goals within educational activities, to researchers that they contribute to the relevant literature and follow international literature, and to various institutions that they take various measures to effectively use active learning in educational activities.
4. Results
The first finding of the research shows that, with the exception of a few years, studies on the relationship between social studies and active learning are few and far between. The second finding is that only twenty-eight of the total two hundred and three universities in our country have conducted studies on the relationship between social studies and active learning. The third finding is that research focusing on the relationship between active learning and social studies is generally concentrated at a specific grade level (4th and 6th grade). The number of studies focusing on the process and conducted simultaneously at different educational levels, as well as studies conducted on teachers and teacher candidates, is negligible. The fourth finding highlights the need to increase the number of mixed-methods research studies. Therefore, since the accuracy and reliability of data obtained through mixed-methods research are considered higher, it is recommended that mixed-methods approaches be adopted in future studies. The fifth finding is that the relevant research is limited to certain methods in the context of data analysis, and the number of studies employing different methods is quite small. The sixth finding is that while studies on the relationship between social studies and active learning are evenly distributed according to the types of data collection tools used, the diversity is quite limited. Tools such as forms, tests, scales, and journals were used in a balanced and evenly distributed manner; however, there was a significant concentration of interview forms among the forms, attitude scales among the scales, achievement tests among the tests, and researcher journals among the journals. The seventh conclusion drawn from the research is that active learning methods are limited by the imagination of the student and the teacher, and that it is necessary to develop and implement different learning methods in the classroom environment. The eighth conclusion obtained from the research is that studies on active learning in the field of social studies focus on academic achievement, attitudes towards the lesson, and the retention of what is learned, and that these studies are based on opinions obtained from various participants on these issues. The ninth finding of the study is that the social studies lesson time is considered insufficient for active learning, that the importance of active learning has not yet been understood by education stakeholders and that active learning develops democratic attitudes in students, contributes to self-development, increases the sense of responsibility, develops effective citizenship skills, supports cognitive and affective development, improves academic achievement, makes what is learned permanent, is an efficient method for a fun learning environment, offers the opportunity to evaluate the entire educational process, and contributes to students’ acquisition of values and skills, as revealed by related research. The final conclusion of the research is that the relevant studies suggest that practitioners use active learning to achieve various goals within educational activities, that researchers contribute to the relevant literature and follow international literature, and that various institutions take various measures to effectively use active learning in educational activities.
