One way analysis of variance and the Tukey Test were used to check whether the difference between the mean values obtained is meaningful. Introduction
It is an undeniable requirement that the century we are living is the information age, and the access to information in this age can easily be achieved by all people. For this reason, the ability to use creativity at a high level, the different and the new, has become even more important for the societies (Demir, 2013:85). Interest in creativity has increased considerably, especially in the 1990s (Craft, 1999:137). It has been discovered that students can be creative in writing, in many areas, at an impressive level, and students are encouraged to think like scientists (Torrance, 1977:15). Gomez (2007:31) stated that creativity is defined in different ways because it is defined by different disciplines and different aspects. But when one considers the common feature of these definitions, it can be said that creativity is an innate ability to be developed (Gartenhaus, 1997: 11-13, Ataman, 1993:11, Ağluç, 2013:3, Özerbaş, 2011:700, Başkök, 2012:11). Rubin (2000) stated that children need rich, rich resources that they can gather information from the first hand so that thinking can take place (Öztürk, 2007:25) When collecting information from rich sources, students will have basic language skills. Students need to have a basic set of background skills like reading, writing and speaking so they can use their creative skills effectively. However, very few studies have examined the relationship between students’ creativity levels and linguistic skills. In studies on creativity and language skill, it focuses on the relationship of creativity with a single language skill.
The Purpose of the Study
In carrying out this research, it was thought that it would be more accurate to look at a holistic perspective on creativity and linguistic skills. The reason for this thinking is that linguistic skills are complex and interrelated skills.
The main aim of the study;
- Do the students’ creative writing skills differ significantly in the context of linguistic competence?
For this main, the following questions will be answered:
- Do the students’ creative writing skills show a meaningful difference in terms of reading skills?
- Do the students’ creative writing skills show a meaningful difference in terms of speaking skills?
- Do the students’ creative writing skills show a meaningful difference in terms of writing skills?
The Model of Research
In our research was used relational screening model.
The Study Group
The sample of the research consists of eighty students from four different classes who read in the 7th grade of a public school in Sivas province center.
Data Collection
The research began with a creative writing work done by students. The data was obtained from the students’ creative writing work on Conquest of Istanbul. The students were asked to prepare a text on the worksheet to be presented on a radio program about Conquest of Istanbul. The students were given about a forty-minute period.
Analysis of Data
The data obtained from this study were scored with the help of rubrik developed by Öztürk (2007). SPSS 15.0 package program was used in the analysis of the data in the study. The mean and standard deviation values of the writing studies are examined and One-way ANOVA and tukey testing were used to explain the significant differences between students’ writing practices.
Result and Discussion
According to the result of the reseach, students with high reading writing and speaking skills scores had higher creative writing skill scores. Thus, it was found that there was a positive releationship between these three basic linguistic skills and creative writing skills.
For example Kara and Akkaya (2014) said that reading the fiction works such as story increases the creativity. On the other hand, Dolmaz and Kaya (2017) has stated that the creativity of students who read scientific and technological writings is high. In general Küçük (2007) says that regular reading habits have a positive effect on creativity. Likely, we have seen that students with high reading skills had high creative writing skills.
Besides, it is understood that the expression of Yağmur Şahin and Zorlu Kana (2013), Kurudayıoğlu (2003) speaking develops creativity, creativity also supports talking. So conversation and creative writing support each other mutually. In our research, similarly, we also obtained a result that students with high speaking skills had high creative writing skills.
Finally Demir (2013) stated that creativity and writing skills are very close to each other an deven identical. In our research, similarly, we also obtained a result that students with high writing skills had high creative writing skills.
